Life Happens

As you know, online teachers are expected to be active in their online classes six days a week. But life complications happen to all of us, and you might find that something arises — planned or unplanned — during the semester to disrupt your involvement in your online class.

If this happens to you, here’s what to do:

Short-Term Absences (1-2 weekdays)

Illness

  • If illness is keeping you away from your online class for a weekday or two, please post an announcement to let your students know that you’ll be absent for a short time.
  • If you’re too ill to handle this yourself, please have someone else call the Online Help Desk, so we can post an announcement on your behalf.
  • Once you’ve recovered, please use weekend days to catch up on anything you missed during your absence.

Travel

  • If you’re planning a short trip and will be away from your online class for a weekday or two, please post an announcement in advance to let your students know about your plans and to explain how you intend to deal with your absence.
  • If necessary, please use weekend days to catch up on anything you missed during your absence.

A Major Crisis

If you will be absent from your online class for more than a couple of days due to illness, extended travel (with no internet access), or a life (or career) crisis of some sort, it’s critical that you contact both your Academic Director and the Online Help Desk as early as possible, to let them know what’s going on. We will work with you to determine the best solution for you and your students — which might entail finding another teacher to fill in for you during your absence, depending on how long you anticipate being away.

What is not acceptable is being absent from your class without explanation! Please keep us in the loop if you anticipate needing an extended time away from your online class.
