As we near the end of the semester, invite your students to think back over what they learned in your class.

Open the conversation

You could open a discussion in Module 14 and invite students to comment on such questions as:

  • What were your personal learning goals for this class? Have you met them? Why or why not?
  • What was the most important concept or skill you learned in this class?
  • What did you find most challenging this semester? What did you find most rewarding?
  • What do you think you need to learn next?
  • What classes are you taking next and how will what you learned in this class help?

Encouraging students to take note of how far they have progressed helps them to see their work in the context of their overall educational goals, and it may also help them to write a more thoughtful (and useful) evaluation of your class.

  1. What concerns you at the end of the semester? How do you help you students through this busy time? Please share your tips!

  2. It is a busy time for ALL of us.  I don't have anything brilliant to offer here, but I do carefully consider the due date for the Final Exam and this year I extended it by 24 hours  - it will be due Monday night instead of Sunday night.  I have noticed over the years that each group of students presents different challenges.  This semester, the overwhelming majority of mine are working full-time.  Discussion posts and assignments are not posted until Sunday evenings just before closing.  Based on this behavior pattern it seemed prudent, and in the students' best interest, to extend the due date for the Final Exam.  I think this is a better option than dealing with hysteria because of a missed deadline.

    1. Great suggestion, Ellie. Since so many students have only the weekend to work on their online classes, it makes a lot of sense to give them a bit of leeway for getting in their final work.

You can extend the deadline for an exam by contacting the Help Desk ( and asking them to change the exam's closing date.

And if you want to give students more time to get their final projects in, you can extend the deadline for those assignments yourself by editing the relevant topics. One thing to keep in mind: after the official end of the semester (12/19 at 11:59 p.m., PST), students can still access the Discussion (and even post, if you have left the topics open), but they can no longer view the modules.
